Level 3 with Núria Puigdevall and Borislav Chongov in Sofia, Bulgaria
The first Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School Level 3 course was successfully held in Sofia, Bulgaria, marking an important milestone in the development of Physiotherapy for Scoliosis in the country.
It was a great honor to welcome Nuria Puigdevall, an internationally recognized instructor with extensive experience in the Rigo Concept and conservative Scoliosis treatment. Throughout the course, she shared her outstanding clinical expertise, guiding participants through advanced theoretical concepts and practical patient management.
Nine experienced physiotherapists from across Bulgaria successfully completed the course. The participants came from Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Varna, Stara Zagora, Targovishte, Bistritsa, Velingrad and Kirkovo, representing different regions of the country. All participants have more than five years of clinical experience in Treatment for scoliosis and have been continuously developing their expertise since beginning their BSPTS education, with some starting their training in Sofia in 2019 together with Dr. Manuel Rigo and Borislav Chongov.
The Level 3 course focused on refining advanced clinical reasoning and mastering the BSPTS principles. Participants deepened their understanding of the four General Principles of Correction: three-dimensional postural correction, Expansion, Muscle Activation, and Integration. They also further developed the Specific Principles of Correction, including self-elongation, asymmetrical sagittal alignment, asymmetrical frontal alignment, pelvic corrections, and specific transverse expansion strategies.
A particularly valuable part of the course was the contribution of Garikoitz Aristegui, who demonstrated how these correction principles are applied in clinical practice, including their integration with the Scoliosis brace. Participants also learned advanced approaches for treating patients before and after spinal surgery.
For the first time in Bulgaria, the BSPTS curriculum also included dedicated training for adult spinal deformities. This part addressed Degenerative scoliosis, Thoracic scoliosis, Lumbar scoliosis, sagittal plane disorders, spinal instability, and age-related postural imbalance. The participants gained practical strategies for Non surgical scoliosis treatment, applying Physiotherapy exercises and Exercises for scoliosis to improve function, balance, and quality of life.
The course reinforced that successful Scoliosis treatment without surgery requires precise clinical assessment, individualized correction strategies, and continuous patient education. Through intensive practical sessions with real patients, participants strengthened their ability to apply the Rigo Concept safely and effectively in everyday clinical practice.
This first Level 3 course represents another important step in expanding high-quality scoliosis education in Bulgaria and strengthening the national network of therapists dedicated to evidence-based conservative scoliosis care.
We sincerely thank Nuria Puigdevall, Garikoitz Aristegui, and Dr. Manuel Rigo for their continuous support, inspiration, and commitment to advancing scoliosis education in Bulgaria.
